Your first gift as a couple

Sunday 22 November: Stir-up Sunday in the UK, the traditional day to make the Christmas pudding. Stirring one together is a sweet, low-pressure date.
Friday 27 and Monday 30 November: Black Friday and Cyber Monday in both countries. The 30th is also St Andrew’s Day, a bank holiday in Scotland.

Stage 1: say what you want, out loud

Commitment starts on your profile. The big apps all let you state your intentions:

Hinge: add Dating Intentions and Relationship Type to your profile. Subscribers can also filter by Dating Intentions and Family Plans, handy if children are a deal-breaker either way.
Tinder: Relationship Goals offers six options, from “Long-term partner” to “Still figuring it out”, according to Tinder.
Bumble: choose up to two “Looking for” intentions, which Bumble says it uses to personalise its Discover recommendations.
eharmony (UK): its Compatibility Matching System suggests matches, and every profile must be at least 50% complete, according to the company.

Stage 2: hear each other before date one

A voice tells you more than a week of texts. Bumble lets you make voice and video calls inside the chat, and either person can now message first, with 72 hours to reply. Hinge removed in-app calls in January 2026, but Voice Notes remain. Tinder’s Face to Face video chat has been retired, so swap numbers once you’re comfortable. On eharmony in the UK, paying members can use Video Date.

Stage 3: dates two to five

The early dates are where most matches quietly fade. Three habits help:

Take turns planning. It shows you’re both invested, and you learn what the other person enjoys.
Mix the settings. A weeknight coffee, a weekend walk and an evening with a friend of each give you a fuller picture than three dinners.
Tell the app how it went. After you swap numbers, Hinge follows up to ask how your date went and uses the answer to improve future suggestions.

Stage 4: step back from the swiping

Once you’re seeing one person, you don’t have to delete everything straight away. Each app has a middle ground:

Hinge: Pause hides you from new people, and you can keep chatting with your existing matches.
Bumble: Snooze Mode hides your profile for 24 hours, 72 hours, a week or indefinitely, and can show your matches an away status. Matches without an active chat expire while you’re snoozed.
Tinder: turn off Enable Discovery in Settings. You won’t be shown to anyone new, but people you liked earlier can still match with you.

One catch: none of these pauses a paid subscription. Cancel it separately in your App Store or Google Play settings if you won’t need it.

Stage 5: the talk, and the delete button

There’s no perfect moment for “are we exclusive?”, but you’ll know it’s close when your chats keep turning to plans weeks ahead. Have the talk in person, not over text.

Hinge’s own pitch is that it’s “designed to be deleted”, and deleting your apps together can be a nice little ritual. Just remember that deleting the app doesn’t cancel a subscription bought through Apple or Google.

In the UK, Hinge is the most used dating app, according to Similarweb’s Android ranking (22 September 2026), and puts intentions on every profile. eharmony suits people who are happy to pay for compatibility-led matching.

In South Africa, the same ranking puts Tinder first, Hinge second and Bumble fourth. Set Tinder’s Relationship Goals to long-term, or try Hinge for prompt-led conversations. eharmony isn’t listed in the South African App Store.
